How do you know when you are travelling in the right direction?

Last night we had our Team meeting our metaphor for working at our best includes a freeway with 5 lanes. All facilitator’s have a lane of their own. The lanes are wide and everyone knows where the Freeway is heading. We have people at the services and we have look outs on the bridge. We also have people ensuring the sign posts are clear and everyone knows where the next stop is if you want to work at your best.

However when I woke this morning I realised that the Freeway metaphor with its wide and safe lanes all moving steadily in the same direction also represented our clients.

During a session we are working with the client to move them efficiently towards their destination, we are watching for all the signs they often miss because they are living at 200 miles an hour. Or perhaps they are stuck in the inside lane with their gaze constantly fixed on the fuel gauge worried they won’t make it to the next exit.

Either way their focus is not on the signs. We help them gain clarity, focus and direction so that in time, they feel ok to plan a route with regular services. They pull over as a matter of course to refuel and check the map.

During an ‘Extreme Listening for Productive Thinking Sessions’ we follow the pace of our clients. If our client wants to pull into the services to think and ponder we simply pull in
beside them and wait patiently. If they want to speed at 100 a miles an hour we
will go with them. Ultimately though we are going to keep focusing them on the
signs they are looking for, the direction they want to achieve. Checking with them
at all times this is the direction that they want to head in.

For many clients when they first start with us they feel almost stuck in the fast lane. They are unable to stop, they can list off for hours all the reasons why they ‘have’ to keep going.

One of our biggest challenges in the early days is that people know they want to work with us. They know they are not working at their best, and yet they just can’t find the exit to book a session at the services to refuel and check the map.

For the first few months gaining the commitment to sessions can be challenging. Giving themselves as little as 2 hours per month seems unthinkable. The demand of the business and often life in general, leaves them feeling if they stop they would have wasted so much time.

And yet what often happens is that if they stop more frequently they can get their bearings, check the map, re-fuel and be more energised, more focused and more able to identify the signs for themselves in between sessions. They simply have to commit to stop.
