As many of you know Mark and I work closely with Business Owners with a vision to grow. We love supporting and inspiring business owners to make decisions with confidence. They often know that in order to move their business up to the next notch they have to do something different and often have to take risks. What can actually be a small step, can seem like a giant leap across a massive chasm.
Last week we had the opportunity to facilitate a business partnership that quite literally took a business across such a chasm and forward towards a global vision. For confidential reasons I won’t be mentioning any names.
It was amazing to be part of the process as the Managing Director and his new business partner established how the partnership would look for the next 12 months, the vision and the dreams of the company for the next 10 years unfolded. A moment was taken to establish strengths and skills in the room. The Managing Director’s wife was present and actively participated the session. In fact by the end of the session the wife was established as a vital member of the team.
As the meeting unfolded the dream became so real and so possible. The little chasm that was at the beginning of the session became a leap that they knew and wanted to make. Not only was the partnership of the Managing Director and his business partner forged that day, by using Clean Language the wife and her strengths were highlight and brought into play giving the Managing Director the support and help required to take the leap.
The next step is to share the process and content in order that the business partner can have work delegated to him and he can add his experience and knowledge to it in collaboration. There is some work to be done to develop the wife’s confidence and skills that she has not used for sometime. However we are confident through Clean Language and the IT support Mark will be able to provide that will come reasonably fast.
The one thing that I had struggled with when building my business is that I wanted my autonomy. Until yesterday I thought that meant I kept my Step by Step Listening Name. That I was in charge. What I realised yesterday is that when autonomy means I am trusted and believed in to do a job my way. When autonomy means that I maintain personal independence then I am happy to operate under the name that is right for the job. I guess after years of working “for” someone does make you fearful of working “with” someone in case they start taking over, telling you what to do etc.
The partnership I facilitated this week was about negotiation. Individuals expressing what they wanted. Sharing what they could bring to the table and what they wanted to take from the table. They expressed clearly what they did not want. Despite this new business partner having his own business, a wealth of experience he wanted to be associated with and fly the flag of this company. His own company stood alone with a completely different market.
It was quite clearly poetry in motion. You know when the penny drops and you go doh!!
You may be a small business owner. It might be just you and right now you wear all the hats. For some, that is just the way you want it to be, you “feel in control” But are you really in control when you are working 7 days a week 14 hours a day.
What kind of control is that?
These people in this room were all amazing and yet the feeling that came from the room knowing they were a team. That they were supporting a common goal and dream was amazing. This is the kind of support we do provide at Step by Step Listening for small businesses isolated and on their own. This kind of partnership is what I hope many of my clients will establish among themselves if not directly with us as a company.
I see these things in stages you first of all develop your own skills a little, then you develop the skill of letting go or delegating.
But when the real magic takes place is when you develop, delegate and collaborate.
Now consider you and your business….
And when you develop, delegate and collaborate what happens next?
Can you develop, delegate and collaborate like that?
Thank you for listening
