One of the hardest things I found in business is letting go. Whether that be letting go of work and delegating or letting go of an idea that has not worked out or letting go of the stuff that jumps up in front of you everyday but really is not important.
This month has seen me letting go of:
- the Networking Group that just was not what my clients wanted
- letting go of the admin in a big way. Isobel Gatherer has been a star at helping me gradually do this thanks Isobel
- letting go of distractions
The one thing that I know my clients find the hardest is not being distracted by the easy or the interesting stuff. Delaying maybe the more challenging or mundane tasks that will really move their business forward.
I was working with a client this week that called this stuff “the shiny stuff” you know the stuff I mean don’t you. The stuff that catches your eye and before you know it you are engrossed fiddling and exploring but not actually doing something that can take your business forward.
A combination of a client reminding me of the shiny stuff, and attending the Monthly 3rd Friday of the month internet marketing seminar this month with Mark from shootingbusiness.com and Sam Russell from The Social Sardine. I was reminded again about time-saving tools like Hoote suite and how I can post status updates in advance. You see my shiny stuff is facebook and emails. I hate not responding immediately.
Internet marketing has huge, huge potential to grow my business. But would I really book in my diary to meet people every day, sitting for hours chatting. The truth is no. I would set some time, but I have to have time to take action, to develop products and more importantly to actually do business. I also attended the Linkedin Mans course which enabled me to fine tune and polish up my profile. With that and hoote suite I can plan my internet marketing more effectively. (Planning was another great reminder from Mark Edmunds)
Would you like you to have more clarity, focus and direction?
To be effective in business you have to be focused on the task in hand. For me this year is about sharing with my clients the skills I have learned over the last 23 years to build relationships and sell without coming across pushy or in the face or worse still desperate. Or worse than all that not selling at all.
What needs to happen for you to gain clarity, focus and direction?
What kind of shiny stuff do you get distracted by?
What needs to happen for shiny stuff to happen and you to stay focused?
Take care if one of the things you get distracted by is reading lots of blogs???
One thing I do is I set them aside in a reading file on outlook and I set a day aside once every 6 weeks to chill with a cup of tea and read through. Occasionally if a title catches my attention and it is in line with my focus and direction right now I will read it immediately.
Please do share below the shiny stuff that distracts you and how you manage it when working at your best
Have a great week
